A Day At The Beach

Yesterday we packed up the truck and drove out to Kaena Point to meet Mike, Pon, their kids, and X. It was a rough ride out. The truck got stuck on the way out and Goy had to walk to get Mike to drive over and pull me out. My wife (Goy) and Mike's wife (Pon) are both Thai and they like to catch the crabs out there. They got many. The water was a little rough, but we did a little snorkeling and I jumped off the rocks. We got to see a couple of whale passing by. Other than the ride out and back, it was pretty fun. Goy was screaming the whole way out and back. Damien said it gave him a headache. I was exhausted when we got home last night.

HAWAII STATE TEAM TIME TRIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Participated in the Hawaii State Team Time Trial Championships yesterday. This was the first time I had done a team time trial and I learned a lot. My team was called the HACC WARRIORS (that is us in the picture with four guys). It was a fun race and HACC had six teams represented in the race. We definitely had the largest showing. I didn't stick around for results, so I will have to post those later when I get them. I did pretty good. The first part of the race I was feeling real good. I started losing it about mile 18 and then picked it up again around mile 22/23. The race was a about 24 miles. Too fun!

Ben Lends A Hand

Thanks to Ben for checking out the Felt today. It seems that I was sold a bottom bracket that was not the right size. All is not lost...I called IT&B and they have another one that should work and since I have to drive back down there, they are going to do all the work for me. It also gives me an excuse to go down and check out their bike swap meet tomorrow. Thanks again, Ben.

The Felt Needs A Fix

My wife was out tonight so did some late night maintenance on the Felt. Finally got the bars taped, so jumped on to take a ride around the block to see how she felt. I had not been on it since installing the new bottom bracket. Well, of course, I found a problem. It seems that the front derailleur is all out of whack...not sure if this is from the new bottom bracket but I am betting that it is. I tried to get it adjusted but had no luck. I will probably have to swing by The Bike Shop tomorrow to see if Mel and the boys can hook me up. If not, I will have to find somewhere to get it looked at on Saturday. Oh, my wife is going to kill me if I have a double bike day weekend. Oh the pain!

The Felt Gets Some TLC

My Felt F75 was in dire need of some TLC...so I gave her a good cleaning this weekend. I had been wanting to take off the bar tape because I botched it up the last time trying to put it on in a hurry. I had also had a couple of wet rides recently and wanted to take out the bottom bracket and check it out. Well, I couldn't get the darn thing out, so Monday I took it down to Momentum to have them take it out for me. I found out that my bottom bracket was shot. Momentum didn't really have any inexpensive options for me and I needed to get things back together for some riding this week and for the Team Time Trial this weekend. I stopped by IT&B and found a bottom bracket that I installed last night. I got all the bar tape off but didn't have a chance to wrap it. So, I missed out on the ride today but I had a Bicycle Advisory Meeting to attend so I would have missed it regardless. Tonight I'll wrap the bars and finish up...she'll be ready to go for this weekend.

Drivin' n' Cryin'

If you aren't from the South, then you probably haven't heard of this band. I used to go watch them in a small club called The 40 Watt when I lived in Athens, GA back around 1988. They are one of my favorites. Click on band's name to check them out. Try the "SMOKE" video first...it's a rocker.

HACC Invades Tantalus

Today was the Tantalus Time Trial. I woke up about 2:30 a.m., couldn't sleep. I have a hard time sleeping the day before a race...I'm always worried I will forget something and I usually end up packing way more than I need. So, I had some breakfast, checked a few things on the computer, grapped my backpack and headed out the door.

I met John there early to set up a canopy tent in case of bad weather. This turned out to be a great idea because it rained almost the entire time we were there. The race went well, we had the best showing of any team there and were the only ones with a tent set up with our bikes on trainers.

The Tantalus Time Trial is 4.5 miles with about 1,400 feet of climbing. It was tough. I have come quite a ways with my cycling but have much to learn and need more time in the saddle (although I doubt my wife would agree with that).

The rain let up a bit on the way up. On the way down the rain started up again and I could barely open my eyes (I had brought my sunglasses but didn't think about changing to the clear lenses before I took off).

All in all...it was a good day of cycling.
